Charlotte Airport Terminal
Information compiled by David Enrich, aviation and airport guide expert since 1999.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is one of the busiest airports in the United States and a major hub for American Airlines. Known for its efficient layout and strong connectivity, CLT serves millions of passengers each year, offering both domestic and international flights across North America, Europe, and beyond.
CLT is designed with a central atrium and radial concourses, making navigation relatively straightforward compared to other large hubs.
History & Origins
CLT opened in 1935 as Charlotte Municipal Airport and was later renamed in honor of former mayor Ben Elbert Douglas Sr. During World War II, it was used as a military base, which helped expand its infrastructure significantly.
In the 1980s, the airport became a hub for Piedmont Airlines, and later for US Airways, which eventually merged with American Airlines. Today, CLT is one of American Airlines’ largest hubs, handling a vast number of connecting passengers daily.
Because CLT is a hub airport, connection times can be tight—aim for at least 60 minutes between flights.
Terminal Layout Overview

Charlotte Airport features a single main terminal building (the Atrium) connected to five concourses: A, B, C, D, and E. All concourses are accessible via pedestrian walkways—no train system is required.
- Main Terminal (Atrium): Ticketing, security checkpoints, baggage claim
- Concourse A: Domestic and some international flights
- Concourse B: American Airlines domestic flights
- Concourse C: American Airlines hub operations
- Concourse D: International departures and arrivals
- Concourse E: Regional flights (American Eagle)
Walking times between concourses can reach 15–20 minutes, so plan accordingly.
Detailed Terminal & Concourse Description
Concourse A
